I was wondering if it is truly possible to unlock a Verizon phone (BB storm) and have it work on the AT&T network? I see it out there a lot and was curious if thats true. I was thinking about trying out one of these phones cause I want to give BB a shot, but want it unlocked so that I still can use my $10 per month internet plan. Let me know what you all think/know about this. Thanks.

do you want it for the touchscreen? if not there are plenty of t-mobile blackberries that you can get unlocked, and then i beleive you could still only use the cheaper data rate..

Verizon and AT&T use different Cellular technologies. Even if you could unlock a Verizon phone, it would not work on AT&T's network (Verizon phones are CDMA and don't use a SIM card, AT&T phones are GSM with SIM cards).

That is what I thought CD. But you see unlocked Blackberry Storms everywhere that say they have been used on T-Mobile, therefore would work on AT&T. I was not sure if it was a hoax or not.

T-Mobile also uses GSM technology like AT&T. So yea, you can swap T-Mobile & AT&T (or any other GSM) SIM cards in unlocked phones.

However, AT&T and T-Mobile use different "3G" frequencies, so a phone designed for 3G on T-mobile will only work with the slower Edge/2G network on AT&T (and visa-versa). That's the thing that sucks. While the 5800 may be unlocked, you are still limited to AT&T if you want full 3/3.5G network speed.

Yeah I would love to try one of those out for a little while and see how it compares to our Nokia 5800. But those prices are way too high. I would like to find one on craigslist a lot cheaper.

Ok so basically if someone on craigslist says they have an unlocked BB Storm that was originally made for Verizon, it will only work on Verizon, Sprint and other CDMA carriers?

Oh and after looking on Ebay too, they say the same thing. Unlocked BB Storm originally from Verizon unlocked for any carrier including AT&T and T-Mobile.

I dunno. That makes no sense to me. Verizon and Sprint phones do not take SIM cards, so how are you supposed to use one on AT&T? There is no SIM slot on a Verizon phone.

And FYI: Boost and Nextel use SIM cards as well, but those phone use IDEN technology, not GSM. So even though their SIM looks pretty much identical to an AT&T/T-Mobile SIM, they are not interchangeable.

You can not put a Boost/Nextel IDEN SIM in an unlocked GSM phone, or an AT&T/T-Mobile GSM SIM in a Nextel/Boost IDEN phone (well, technically you could, but it won't work).

Just in case CDMA and GSM wasn't confusing enough for ya. Wink

Well after further review, I am gonna sell the BB Storm. It looks like it could be a very sweet phone, but it is not unlocked at the moment and I do not feel like paying for it to be unlocked. I read somewhere that BB devices use a special server that is controlled by your carrier. So you would have to sign up for the BB data plan. I was hoping to use my $10/month data plan. So I do not want to pay to unlock it and find out that I am right about signing for the more expensive plan.
