Welcome to the forum. Everyone is different on what they want/use for apps and what not. I just did a hard reset and formatted my memory card and the first things I put on there is Garmin XT and a few apps from the OVI store like Accuweather and Bight Light. Those are items I use all the time.

You should not need to worry about a hard reset until your phone gets too much crap on it and slows it down a ton. But as far as how to do it, do a search on this forum and you will find it. Garmin is also on this forum. The other apps are on the Ovi store. That is a program you put on your phone and search for apps.

There are many for free (not really all that great - but there are a few good ones). Mostly stuff on there is purchasable, but I have yet to buy anything cause I am stubborn.

And if you want to purchase software, do not buy it from the Ovi store!

It installs directly to the phone, and they will not let you download it again without paying. So if you have to reset and don't have a current backup you are screwed. Heck, even if there is a problem with the first download and install you are screwed. There are loads of complaints from people who had errors when they tried to install something they bought and it failed. Ovi store is poorly implemented and very customer hostile. Getting free stuff is okay, but if you want to buy something, get it from somewhere that will let you re-download and/or download the software to your PC.

You should mention if you have an unlimited data (and/or messaging plan) as that will affect what apps we recommend, and how to get them. For example, the Ovi store uses quite a lot of data and likes to default to the Cell packet data connection, so you might not want to install that if you don't have a data plan.

However, the phone does have WiFi capability, so if you have a wireless router you can set it up to use your WiFi to download apps and updates. Do that before using the Download, App Update or Ovi Store applications.

Anyway... when you first set up your phone check the firmware version. If it is not v21.2.025 (assuming you are in the US) then install the PC Suite software on your computer and do a firmware update. The v21 firmware is a huge improvement over the older versions and you definitely want to get that.

Next, run app update and install the Flash plugin. This updates the browser support to Flash 9, Action Script 2.

There will also be a Mail For Exchange app update, so if you use Exchange Mail you could install that as well. Personally I don't use Exchange, so I removed MFE and just use the built-in messaging for my POP and IMAP mail.

Launch the Download app, and if you see anything other than the Ovi Store (like an Applications category), look for Zip Manager. It was only available from Download/Applications, but is no longer available (however Applications in the download app does, from time to time, mysteriously reappear). If you are lucky enough to find Zip Manager, install it to phone memory and do a backup (oh, and add it to your favorites in the Download app). Then go ahead and install the Ovi Store Client.

If you have a data plan and want to keep in touch with IM clients like AIM, MSMessenger, ICQ, etc. Be sure to grab Nimbuzz. It's a very nice freeware multi-protocol IM client. I would grab it directly from their web site, since the version on Ovi is older.

If you want to play with the GPS features, upgrade to Nokia OVI Maps 3.0 (the phone comes with 2.0). It's a free upgrade, and the maps are free, but you have to pay if you want voice guided navigation (you do get a free trial period, though). Note that this update can take more than an hour since it will need to update the maps as well. Also, be sure to install Google Maps, which is also free and is awesome for getting directions (but no voice guidance). There is also AmaZe GPS and Nav4All which have turn by turn voice guidance, and are free as well. Google, AmaZe and Nav4all all use data. Ovi Maps does not if you turn off Assisted GPS and don't do searches.

Go to the Nokia Beta Labs site and grab the Photo Browser application. Free, and really nice! Note that this is also on Ovi, but the one from Beta Labs is newer and much faster.

If you like music, check out Midomi and/or Shazam. Both are offering a free trial right now.

As far as other applications go, it all depends on your interests. Some useful ones were mentioned above. AccuWeather or WeatherBug will give you real time weather info. Bright Light or Phone Torch will let you use the camera's LED flash as a flashlight (Phone Torch has other features as well, like Morse code, but the UI on BL is nicer).

Note that Garmin XT is NOT free. The version offered here is an illegal pirate copy. If that doesn't bother you then go for it. Otherwise check out the truly free GPS apps I mentioned above.

Some other cool, free apps from Ovi are Handwriting Calculator, UpCode (bar code reader) and Coin Toss. If you like analog clocks and want something easier to read than that tiny home screen Nokia one, grab Watch Lite. There is also Timer Lite if you need a free stop watch app.

Search your memory card for the .jad/.jar files for Guitar Rock Tour (if your phone comes with it) and make a backup copy of those. You will need them to re-install if you ever decide to wipe your phone and memory card.

That's all I've got for now. Have fun with your new phone!

Hey CD what does the zip manager do for you? I do not see the need for our phone, but if you can tell me how you use it, maybe I will change my mind.

Also I did a hard reset and wiped my memory card clean and I was thinking, there was another game on here, what was it. Well it was guitar rock tour. Oh well, the other two installed back up, how come that one did not?

Zip Manager lets you create and extract ".zip" archives. Comes in handy since a lot of the stuff you download is zipped. I suppose if you don't surf and download/upload on the phone then it's not needed.

If you made a backup of your memory card before wiping it, look in the folder "Private/102033e6/MIDlets/[1012a646]" for the Guitar Rock Tour jad/jar files (last folder number may be different, so if you don't see it there look for the MIDlets folder). Don't know why it doesn't automatically re-install. I think it was an add-on and not part of the phone's OS image. I've heard that not all versions of the 5800 came with that game.
