Yup, you read that right. There is yet another firmware rolling out for our 5800 phones. Firmware v50 is available overseas for the RM-356 phones, but not (yet) for the RM-428 North American Models sold in the US.

Cheesy Sad

Here's a quote from someone who has updated on another forum...

Quote from: POLO_011 on howardforums
V50.0.005 is OUT!!!
Not sure if it is for NAM though. My 5800 is Euro1 Red 0558982.
Went into the SW Update app (weird, didnt know firmware updates could be done via SW Update) anyway it showed Phone Software Update (12mb). Took 10mins to download and update via HSDPA.
Changes ive noticed:
We now have the N97 V21 Music Player with the mini album arts in Artist, Album, Playlist etc. . .views, like the iPods.
Kinetic scrolling is now in the WHOLE UI, so we now have it in Main Menu, Applications Menu etc...
Web browser has been updated to 7.2 ,it now has full kinetic scrolling, not just in bookmarks like in V40,but its now there in web pages etc... Its also a lot faster at rendering pages, and goes into Fullscreen automaticaly.
Ovi Maps3.03 is now built-in and due to this it has freed up around 12mb extra mem in C: internal memory.
RealPlayer has been updated as well
Ovi Sync app has been added
And a bit more RAM is available, like an extra 3mb.
Music Store is now Ovi Music
And thats all i see so far, some say QuickOffice is now built-in but i dont see it anywhere in my phone.

It shows as available in Navifirm, so this post is likely legit.

Here's more info about v50:
http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/010/04/new_firmware_for_nokia_5800_now_available_as_fota_update.htm

I'm not very happy with v40 - the browser seems to crash more often, and the vibration alert has stopped working on several occasions. I've never had this before and I'm always keeping my phone on vibrate. I'd have to restart to make it work again, and when restarting with v40 I would often not be able to get past the white Nokia screen unless I remove the battery and then reboot. I hope v50 is better.

How long will it take for Nokia to make the v50 firmware available for the North American 5800?  What has been past history?
Among the many things I am anxious to see what improvements they did to Real Player because there are some live streaming feeds I don't get video but get audio or the other thing is I get double buffering and then a freeze at 99% on the second buffer.

It's impossible to predict. In the past it has generally been a long wait (with NAM being 2 or 3 firmwares behind), but very recent firmwares have been less so.

If you want to take the v40 firmware as an example, it rolled out overseas around 01/20/2010, then became available for the US/NAM Navigation Edition on 02/22/2010, and finally became available for the more common 0577454 US/NAM XpressMusic on 03/22/2010. So roughly a month for some NAM product codes, and another month for the most common XM version.

@DJ101,
There is one guy on howardforums who claims to have installed the RM-356 version using JAF. But in general it's considered to be a bad idea to install firmware from a different RM revision. Navifirm currently only shows RM-356 product codes for v50. Sad

Well I have some time to wait once again. My 5800 is back with Nokia. Out of nowhere it started acting up again. It just started showing colorful lines (vertical) on the screen and nothing else but lines. Good thing I am still in warranty. I think this is my last month of warranty though, so they better fix it for good this time. I complained quite a bit this time around cause this is the 3rd or 4th time I have had to send it in to them. Stupid Nokia. They are so cheap, they fix one tiny little thing and consider it good without looking anymore into it.

I noticed with my 5800 when I plug it in to charge, turn it off, then the next morning I turn it on I get some funky looking screen with vertical lines then it like fades away.  Then I turn it on again and its fine. It just started to do this too.
What was the precursor to that screen problem displaying lines you had?

Mine just started doing it while playing on the internet. Then I took it to the bedroom cuz its my alarm too and when I came into the room after brushing my teeth I noticed it was stuck on that screen. The first time it happened it did not fade away, or the second time for that matter. The first time I actually hit the call end button and it went away. The second time, nothing would work. I somehow got it turned off, but just left it off and sent it to Nokia the very next day.

So far I had to reinstall the OS due to sluggishness twice in the 4 months of ownership.   That helped with what I noticed on mine.
I hope you get yours fixed.

Firmware v50 is now available for the somewhat infamous RM-428 0574994 product code, which is an "NA" code (as opposed to NAM). While this code has been used in the past with success, a few people had their phones die after using this code for v40 updates.

Curiously, there are actually TWO v50 firmware listings for this code as well, and no one knows what the difference is (shows up twice in Navifirm). If you want to be brave, give it a shot. There are a couple of people on Howard forums claiming success using the 0574994 PC.

I have the RM-428 Nam and updated to version 50.2.005 last night via OTA and is working great. Ovi suite shows the update too but I have problems with my PC.

For the ones with the screen problem if your phone is under warranty take it to a Nokia repair center or send it to one because its just going to get worst it happened to me.  I did it and they sent me another 5800XM and this one is working fine.
