Using the 5800 as a modem
«

As I'm kicking NTL out of the house in a couple of weeks time, I was thinking of connecting my Nokia 5800 to my laptop in future when I want to update my website or do my email.
I've got the £5 a month unlimited Broadband, but just to be on the safe side, I didn't want an enormouse bill at the end of the month.
So I rang T-Mibile and asked about plugging my Laptop into my phone to surf the net when I needed it. The women I spoke to disapeared for 10 minutes and when she came back, asked me to plug the phone into the laptop so she could see what would happen when I logged on to the Internet through the phone.
I refused, saying that I was on the mobile at that moment and if I plugged the laptop into the phone I'd lose the connection to her. I couldn't make her understand what would happen, so I rang off.
I don't think their sure what goes on when you connect your laptop to the phone to surf the web. That woman certainly didn't.
I wondered if any one else had done this problem and was there any change in there bill because of it.
Thanks.

Cheers Mate
I googled it and had a look on the site and downloaded and printed the extra help files.
As I'm old, it takes a while for stuff to sink in.
But it looks like a good Idea. Did you have any trouble loading it to your phone.
My 5800 is very temperamental about apps I try to shove on it.
I don't want to spend 9 euros and find it wont load to the phone.
Thanks for the heads up.
I'm grateful.

OK then
I spent 9 euros and got the software which I've installed on the phone. *
IT WORKS
*.
How do I know, because I'm on it now as I post this reply. It was quite straight forward for an old guy.
Just one question.
Now that I'm surfing the web through the phones WiFi conection, what does T-Mobile see at their end. I wonder if their sitting around scratching their heads saying "Never seen it do that before".
If all goes well, I'm thinking of opening a "Starbucks" franchise in my garden shed, I make a mean cup of coffee.
Let me know what you think dj101.
Thanks.

The beauty of Joikuspot is that it looks like a normal packet data connection to your carrier. If you don't tell them they won't know you are tethering. If you tether using the "normal" method (Bluetooth or USB modem) the phone company can tell, but with Joiku it just looks like you are surfing around on the phone.
Note that the 5800 does not support 3G high speed packet data on T-Mobile, only the slower 2G service, and that is why you can't surf and talk at the same time. Also your Internet performance will be quite slow on T-Mobile.
The transceiver in the 5800 is optimized for 3.5G access on AT&T, and on AT&T you can talk, surf, google maps or whatever all at the same time. It's capable of up to 3.6Mbps on AT&T, which is reasonably fast (about half as fast as my home cable connection). AT&T actually supports up to 7.2Mbps, but very few phones are compatible with that speed.

Thankyou CD
I've asked that question on lots of other forums and didn't get one answer. Now I'm satisfied that T-mobile is in the dark, and as for speed, at 65 everything goes at a slower speed so this isn't a problem for me.
Thanks again for your explanation.
