Yep, buying a subsidized Smartphone or iPhone is not saving money. If you do the simple math you almost always come out ahead with an unlocked phone (especially if you can get by using only WiFi).

That's the reason AT&T started forcing all iPhones to the $30/month data plan. People found out it was cheaper to pay full price or get it on ebay.

With the new "A-List" plans they are starting to force other phones to "Smartphone/PDA" plans as well. Currently it's only unlocked versions of Smartphones that AT&T sells, but I suppose it's only a matter of time before they force all unlocked phones to $30/month data (like T-Mobile does).

They are also forcing $20/month data+messaging bundles on "Feature" phones now as well.

That's why we will NEVER upgrade our plan. We're "Grandfathered" in from an old Cingular plan with a "Smartphone Exclusion" SOC so we can use "Smartphones" with cheap $10/month family plan unlimited data, or no data at all if we choose (my nephew has his iPhone 3G on $10/month data).

I thought using unlocked phones would be a great way to get around paying for the $30/mo. But to my dismay, I was using the Palm Treo Pro and AT&T caught on and got ahold of me and changed me to the higher plan. I was pissed cause that is actually a great phone. Worked better than my 5800 and e71. So I ended up giving them my serial # to my 5800 and they said they inputted that # into their system as a Samsung Eternity and put me back on the cheaper plan. Go figure. So now I really hope my 5800 comes back fixed and I am happy with it.

Does anyone know if the N97 works like the 5800 as in, will I be able to use the cheaper data plan like with the 5800? I recently won a Motorola Droid of a website and was thinking of trading it for a N97 (you know a phone I can at least try out and use). The Droid would be a fun phone to play with, but I am not switching to Verizon just for that.

Like I said, it seems that only unlocked versions of phone's AT&T also sells (or used to sell) are being tagged and forced to the PDA data plans. Since they do not sell any incarnation of the N97 you should be fine (for now). I haven't heard of anyone being "upgraded" for using an N97.

Just out of curiosity, are you on A-List, or have you made any other recent changes or upgrades to your plan?

No I did not make any changes to my account. I was using the Treo Pro for a couple months too before they caught on. So I am not sure what happened. But they dont seem to mind when I use the 5800 or even the e71. And they sell the e71x, go figure. But I will sell my e71 once I have a good working 5800. And once I get the Droid, I would love to trade it for a N97. Or probably end up selling it and buying one.

Interesting. I know there were several policy changes with A-List that lets them push mandatory data/messaging plans on lots of phones (not just smart phones, but feature phones as well). I thought older plans were exempt from that, but I guess not all of them are (based on your experience).

Symbian phones should still be a safe bet, since AT&T sells both "smart" and "dumb" phones running Symbian. Phones with WinMo, Android or Palm OS are pretty much all Smartphones, so those are likely the ones being targeted for mandatory service upgrades.

How long have you been with AT&T, and do you have any other phones on your plan with Smart/PDA/iPhone data?

Just wondering why our plan got a Smartphone exclusion and yours didn't?

I've been with AT&T for 6 years now with the same plan from when I started. So I am really curious on how your nephew can use the Iphone on the cheaper plan? You guys are really lucky. Hope that stays that way for you. I wish it would have for me. Im also thinking if I stick with these symbian phones I might be ok. I hope at least I will be ok.

AT&T did just come out with that LG Arena. That phones looks pretty cool if I do have to switch to another phone. I am not eligible for a upgrade for another few months or so though. Sucks cause right now at wirefly.com, they are offering EVERY AT&T phone for free right now.

Oh and no I do not have any other phones on my plan. Well my wifes phone is a classic slider phone, nothing special. I have been switching between the 5800, e71 and the Palm Treo Pro cause I was having issues with my 5800. So I used the Treo Pro since December 2009 with no issues from AT&T. Then just a couple weeks ago, I started having issues with them. My 5800 is on its way back already from Nokia, so hopefully everything is fixed on it and I will have no more issues with it. But I am keeping an eye out for the N97 still cause that looks like a cool phone to play with that AT&T will not charge extra for. What about the N900, you think AT&T would charge extra for that?

From what I have heard on other forums, the N97 isn't all it's cracked up to be. A lot of people are unhappy with them due to limited memory and GPS issues. You might want to consider the N97 Mini instead. Still not perfect, but less complaints.

Hopefully your 5800 will have been fixed and finding another phone won't be an issue. I've been very happy with mine.

I've been wondering about the N97 issues. I know it had all kinds of issues in the early stages. But figured Nokia fixed all that with firmware updates. Who knows, like you said there may be still a ton of issues. If I can find a mini, then I will go for it. I'd like to make a one for one trade, but will probably have to sell, then buy.

Some of the N97 issues were resolved with the v20/21 firmware, but the limited RAM and limited C: drive space are hardware design limitations. People also complain about the slow CPU. The Mini has the same CPU, but has a lot more C: drive room (although less total storage).

There was also a problem with the "protective" lens cover scratching the camera lens (supposedly fixed on the later production runs).

My ride with the 5800 has generally been a good one. I have had some problems along the way, but most have been pretty minor. I know I bitch about Nokia making us NAM users wait for firmware, but even with the waits they've released a lot of updates in a short time.

I hope Nokia takes care of you and fixes your 5800 properly.

Yea, I was looking for another phone to have as a backup, and really could not find anything I liked as much. So when Amazon did the price dump on the 5800 Navi recently I got one of those. Now I have a spare AC charger & battery, as well as a car charger and a nice suction cup swivel mount to use with my phone.

Well it looks as though Nokia did nothing. They said they put it through a bunch of their tests and it passed them all. So we will see again.
