But, there's a catch... [d'oh!]  Shocked

It's only available for the Navigation Edition.  ** EDIT: It's now out for 0577454 **

So... if you have the good ol' XpressMusic you are SOL for the moment. However, you could follow my instructions in the How To section on changing your product code to the Navigation Edition and get the update now.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM/US type RM-428 product code 0577454
Nokia 5800 Navi Edition NAM/US type RM-428 product code 0591814

Currently only available through NSU (no FOTA yet).

This new firmware incorporates the home screen from the 5530 with the scrolling contacts bar widget so you can have more than 4 contacts on the home screen (I think the max is 20 now). however, the size of the contacts bar has increased so only 3 show on screen at a time (vs 4 on the older firmware).

Also, it is now possible to have both the contacts bar and shortcuts on the screen at the same time.

Kinetic scrolling has been added, but still doesn't work in the web browser. Sad

Overall performance is good. Screen response and phone speed seem comparable, and maybe even a little better than v31.

Web browser stability has improved (better than v31 but is still not as good as it was with v21). Flash support is still at v9.1.121.31 (same as v31, or older firmware with the Flash Lite 3.1 update).

Ovi Contacts is included in firmware (but the original contacts app is there as well).

Oh, and text input will automatically switch between T9 in portrait mode to full-screen QWERTY in landscape mode (this is really nice IMO).

While the new Contacts home screen looks good, there are some issues  Angry

With the older contacts bar I could have up to 5 people only 2 taps away. 4 on the contacts bar (just tap the contact, then tap the phone icon or green button), and one at the top of my contacts list (put a "1" in front of their name to sort them there).

Well now only 3 are on screen, and when you tap one and then tap the phone icon or green button it will ask you if you want to dial the mobile or home number (instead of defaulting to the first number like before). So now it is at least one additional step (+ scrolling if needed).

With the old contacts screen you could also start a new text message with only 2 taps. Now it's not only worse, but it's even more annoying than the phone issue above!

v31: Tap contact's icon, then the message icon.

v40: tap contact's icon, then the message icon, then choose between, "Message", "Audio message", or "E-Mail", and then YOU STILL HAVE TO PICK A PHONE NUMBER! Like I could even send a text message to a home phone! WTF!! And who gives a crap about an audio message when everyone has voicemail and/or an answering machine!

I'm personally finding this new contacts home screen really annoying! They have pretty much destroyed the usefulness of the contacts home screen since the number of steps required is now the same as simply opening the contacts app and going from there.

If there is some way to restore the older functionality I have not been able to find it. So be warned, if you will find the added nonsense irritating you should probably skip this update.

My phone was officially sent out today back to Nokia. So I have to wait and hopefully by the time I get it back it will be to all NAM phones. Cant wait to check it out. I wish they would make a way to get weather on the home screen.

I'm still undecided about this new firmware. It has some really nice features, but they traded form for function on the home screen, and that really bugs me.

However, after more than week of steady use I can happily report that the new firmware is quite stable. The phone has performed flawlessly. No freezes, spontaneous reboots or dropped calls. I have had the occasional browser crash, but they have been fewer and farther between than on v31.

No software issues either. All the apps I have tried have performed as expected.

Overall I'd rate stability as better than v31.

I would like to point out that I did hard reset and reload after updating. On other forums there have been reports of some nasty issues with this firmware, but I have experienced none of them. The fact that I "started from scratch" may have helped.

So, anyone else besides DJ tried this yet?

Just wondering what others think of the new v40 firmware? Most people who have tried it are VERY excited and really love it. I seem to be the sole exception (not counting the few who have had trouble with the update).

I'm warming up to it, but I'm still not thrilled that it takes 3 taps to call someone, or 4 taps to start a message from the Contacts bar (when it used to only take 2).

However, having contacts, shortcuts and email notifications on the home screen all at once is quite nice. And auto switching between T9 and QWERTY when you rotate the phone is awesome. Combine that with the fact that stability and performance have not been lost (in fact it seems to be better) and it's hard not to like v40.

My only other gripe is that it doesn't incorporate the new Ovi/Nokia Maps 3.03 with free nav. That would have saved over 12MB on C:. Oh well... there's always next time (v41?).

Navifirm has another RM-428 product code supported now, but it's not a NAM (North American Model). At least it shows Nokia is working on supporting more product codes.

Again, for NAM XM users who don't want to wait, go here (click) and follow the directions using the Navi product code. The only difference will be the default theme. No sound waves, the Navi has a different background picture by default (see below).

Okay, v40 is out for yet another NAM product code, but it's not 0577454.

0592207: 5800 RM-428 NAM Region US Black PR4.0 MR
0591814: 5800 RM-428 NAM Region US Sangalo Black NAVI

Comparing it to the v40 firmware for the Navi, it seems to be slightly different.

Files that appear to be the same:
RM-428_40.2.005_prd.rofs2.V17 (19,797 KB)
RM-428_40.2.005_prd.core.C00 (108,049 KB)
RM428_0591814_40.2.005_002_signature.bin (3 KB)
RM428_0591814_40.2.005_002.vpl (5 KB)
RM428_0591814_40.2.005_002.dcp (13 KB)

Files that are different:

Navi: RM-428_40.2.005.465.03.rofs3.prd.fpsx (979 KB)
NAM: RM-428_40.2.005.443.01.rofs3.prd.fpsx (786 KB)

Navi: RM428_40.2.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx (89 KB)
NAM: RM428_40.2.005_002_U443.uda.fpsx (861 KB)

I wonder what that last one is (it's almost 10 times larger)?

LOL! Sorry.

Gotta wonder what's going on with Nokia. The 0577454 product code is the most common one (the one they have sold the most of) in the US, so what's up with the wait? Whoever makes the decisions over there must be smokin' something powerful.

But now you have a choice of codes if you want to get the update early. I'm tempted to flash my other phone with this new code to see the difference. I was waiting for one to go live for FOTA, because I have never done a FOTA update and just wanted to try it.

I'm curious about this new code. The firmware seems to be about 600KB larger, but the numbers on the files suggest a lower revision. It's all quite odd...

I will wait to do anything like this until after my warranty is up. I only have a few months left on it. Nokia keeps delaying anyway. I will send them the phone and they say it passed some tests and just ship it back. I bet if I did not have a warranty, they would be like, oh we found this and this and this wrong, that will cost you $300 to repair.

Okay, v40 popped up for RM-428 product code 057994 "NA Black" but I would avoid that one. There have been reports of it bricking phones.  Cry

Kinda makes me wonder about the "NA" designation (vs NAM). Might not be a North American firmware after all (or it could just be corrupt).

I've installed both the Navi version (0591814) and the other NAM version (0592207) and both my phones are working. Only difference I can find is the default theme (Navigation vs Sound Waves). So those 2 are fine.

Sorry, JT, still waiting for 0577454.

I really thought this was gonna be the one, lol. I figured you would not say anything until the big one hit. Oh well, I was wrong. Still have to be patient.

v40 is not out for 0577454 yet.

Nah, I'm just messin' with ya. It actually IS OUT! It went live Sunday night So fire up NSU and get yourself some v40 action. I just flashed my XM using the "official" 0577454 product code and all seems well.

Got a bit of a scare when something called the Nokia Service Controller crashed and Winblows said it had to reboot during the update.  Shocked  But the update seemed to finish and the phone rebooted. After Windows restarted NSU automatically ran again and offered a reflash option. I went ahead and reflashed (even though it was working) and the second pass went through without incident.

So now both my Navi and XM are running "official" Nokia v40...

Software version
V 40.2.005

Software version date
31-12-09

Custom version
40.2.005.263.04 (XM)
40.2.005.465.03 (Navi)

Custom version date
17-03-2010 (XM)
29-01-2010 (Navi)

Language set
17

Model
5800 XpressMusic

Type
RM-428

Interesting that the XM has a newer software date, but seems to have a lower version 263.04/465.03 ? Unless the custom version # is backwards, in which case the XM would be 4.263 and the Navi would be 3.465 ?

Anyway, flashed and functional. Haven't had time for any significant testing, but so far so good...
